Over the course of the Summer of 2020, ReSTEM held a variety of classes, ranging from 6th grade math to C++ coding. With these classes, we had 20+ teachers and 100+ students.
reSTEM is partnering up with LTN to provide a chemistry class. This course is a brief introduction to high school level chemistry, using the book that is implemented in the Fremont Unified School District curriculum. Ten high school students will teach this course, with three to four teachers per day, including students who have earned a 5 on the AP Chemistry test. We will have two hour classes for four weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The topics we will be covering are, matter and change, measurements and calculations, atoms: the building blocks of matter, arrangement of electrons in atoms, the periodic law, chemical bonding, chemical formulas and chemical compounds, chemical equations and reactions, stoichiometry, states of matter, gases, solutions, ions in aqueous solutions, acids and bases.
We are offering this class to 12 - 15 year olds, and they must have proficient knowledge in Algebra 1.
What:
This course will introduce children to high school level algebra 1, using the books that are implemented in the Fremont Unified School District curriculum.
10 high school students will teach this course (assisted by three TAs), with two students teaching per day.
Algebra 1: This course is recommended for 6th and 7th graders who are planning on taking Algebra 1, but is also open to younger or older students.
When:
Each session will be one hour, from Monday to Friday. These classes will go on for 8 weeks (June 1st to July 24th). Our first class will be free.
Why:
reSTEM is using this math class as a way to give back to the community by donating all proceeds to coronavirus relief (via face masks or a direct donation to Feeding America, a nonprofit organization that is providing food to families who are unable to provide for themselves at this time).
What:
This course will introduce children to high school level geometry, using the books that are implemented in the Fremont Unified School District curriculum.

Geometry: This course is recommended for 8th graders who have some foundation of algebra prior to this class.

What:
This computer science course will teach children the basics of coding with C++, and provide a solid foundation for C++ syntax and coding in general. This course should provide children with the introduction for computer programming.
Who:
Three high school students who are well-versed in c++, and have been using it for many years in competitive programming competitions
This course is meant for students from 5th to 10th grade, with no prior knowledge of C++ or programming in general
When: 06/10/2020-07/12/2020
Each class will be one hour, twice a week, total 10 classes
This class will take place through zoom meetings and the main mode of communication will be Google Classroom.

What:
This course will introduce incoming seventh and eighth-graders to high school level reading comprehension, through assigned readings of carefully selected pieces of literature (including fiction, nonfiction, novels, news, and other primary documents) every week. Special attention will be placed on synthesizing text in a concise manner, expanding vocabulary, close reading techniques, and critical text analysis—through weekly reading-journal assignments and reading comprehension exam practice—that will be useful in future English classes and standardized testing.
Who:
Two college students (Brown University, University of Southern California) will be teaching this course.
When: 6/8/2010 ~7/31/2020 (8 weeks)
Each session will be one hour, twice a week.
